They were very similar in size and appearance to the classic Solo 103, which they replaced but these units were made in Korea. The cabinets were still an walnut veneer but the 4″ drivers used were generally a step down from the Fosters in the SA-103.

The SA-101 was the last in the line of their better performing mini-amplifiers. When introduced in 1975, its ‘”clean, modern style” cosmetics were a departure from the “classic silver era” look that was trending at the time. Its successor in the Realistic line, introduced in 1980, returned to classic cosmetics but could not match the performance of the SA-101, which boasted higher power and a more usable tone control. The SA-101 amplifier performed well with many of the entry level speakers that Radio Shack and others offered. A nice value in a very compact 3.5″ x 9.25″ x 7″ package wrapped in walnut gained vinyl veneer. THIS OFFERING IS FOR THE REALISTIC SA-101 AMPLIFIER WITH A PAIR OF JVC FSSD990 SPEAKERS. A much bigger and more appealing sound than you would expect from such a compact system. They have plentiful bass for nearfield listening and a mid range that others have described as ‘magical’. These speakers, from JVC’s late 1990’s “Executive Series” have achieved cult-like status.

When introduced in 1969, its relatively heavyweight, high quality construction,with attractive front panel and wooden end panels, set it apart from the cheap, lightweight mini-amps that both preceded it and followed it. The JVC speakers are cosmetically beautiful and their sound is surprisingly good They were introduced as part of JVC’s “Executive” series of high quality compact stereos in the late 1990’s. The wooden trim and a classic layout on the amplifier go nicely with the cherrywood speakers and the little amp’s performance far exceeds that of most of the mini-amps that were common in the 1960’s and 1970’s. When combined with JVC’s excellent Executive series mini-speakers, you end up with a compact system that looks retro-great and delivers remarkably decent sound for such small drivers.The SA-100 amplifier performed well with many of the entry level speakers that Radio Shack and others offered. It is a fun amplifier to use with a number of small single driver speakers including Realistic Solo-1, Minimus 8 , Solo-103 and JVC Executive Series.Many of the FSSD9 in our current stock have wood trim that is in better condition than the pair in our photographs. As compared to the JVC FSSD990, the FSSD9 offers a bit better performance by placing from a similar driver in a somewhat larger, less styled cylindical enclosure. The best performing Executive series speaker was the UX 7000 which places a high performance driver in a small more cubical enclosure –it is a true gem of a mini-speaker which has won great praise for for outstanding sonic quality. We list systems with these separately.
